THE DAY THE DAM BROKE
No one knows which day it will be. We can plan, foresee, build systems and reserves, but a day always comes when something breaks — a person, an illusion, a certainty we considered unshakable. What makes that day so particular is that, almost always, we recognize it only afterward. When it happens it seems an event. Later we understand it was a frontier.
We think we suffer for what we lose. Very often we suffer for what we believed was eternal. When something truly breaks, the first impulse is to repair — anything rather than accept that some things cannot be rebuilt in their original form. That is where you discover who you are. Not when everything works. When something stops working.
Many imagine resilience as a heroic quality. I have always seen it differently. Strength says: I will resist. Resilience says: I will transform myself. Crises separate the essential from the superfluous with almost cruel precision — people who seemed central become irrelevant, small things take on immense value: an embrace, a phone call, a sincere word.
Looking back, the day everything broke was not also the day everything ended. It was the day something different began. The question that remains is not why did it happen, but who did I become afterward. The day everything broke did not destroy only something. It forced me to discover what would remain standing.
